I like to work only with hand tools, with plenty of patience and physical contact with the pieces I’m working on.
My technique is basically the classical Cremonese method, with some adaptations. I use internal molds, but mine are larger than the ones commonly used by the Stradivarian school. Beyond this, the contours of my backs, as is the case in many contrabasses, especially in the upper part, don’t totally follow the contours of the tops so it is necessary to form more complex molds.
For the purfling, as well as for other important phases of work, I carefully follow the recommendations of Maestro Sacconi, from his “I Segreti di Stradivari”. My varnishes are produced artisanally, with natural resins and solvents; I like to use a hybrid technique, utilizing turpentine as well as alcohol as bases in my varnishes.
